Looking for a web developer in Hull? The first real decision isn't the technology, and it isn't the price. It's simpler than that: freelancer, or agency? I've been both. I ran an agency for years before going independent, so what follows is an honest look at the trade-offs rather than a pitch.
What an agency gives you
Scale and cover. That's the real draw. A team, a project manager, someone to pick up the phone when your main contact is away on holiday, and the capacity to take on a genuinely large build. If your project is big, complex, and needs several specialisms firing at once, that structure earns its cost.
You pay for that structure whether you use it or not. Account managers, offices, overhead: it all lands on the bill. And the senior developer whose work you're actually buying often sits behind layers of other people, which means your brief passes through a few hands before it ever reaches the person writing the code.
What a freelancer gives you
With a good freelance developer, you deal straight with the person doing the work. No brief lost in translation. No account manager relaying messages back and forth. No overhead quietly loaded onto your bill. For most small and medium business sites, that works out faster, cheaper, and a good deal clearer.
The honest trade-off? Cover and capacity. One person can't be in two places, and a solo developer has to be choosy about how much they take on at once. The way I handle it is simple. I'm straight about timelines, and I only take work I know I can do properly.
How to choose well
Ask who will actually write your code, and whether you'll get to talk to them directly. Ask how they handle speed and security, not just how the site looks on the day it goes live. Then ask what happens after launch. Freelance or agency, it honestly doesn't matter which way you lean, because the answers to those three plain questions will tell you far more about how the work will actually go than any polished portfolio ever could.
